“Akufo Addo’s Legitimacy As A President Must Be Questioned” – Koku Anyidoho

Sharing is caring:

Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho says the party is ready to fight to eradicate the notion that some people are more Ghanaian than others in relation to the registration and issuance of the Ghana Card.

According to Koku Anyidoho, there is a need for the voter’s ID card to be used as a prerequisite for the acquisition of the Ghana card. “Space must be open for us to allow the use of the voter’s ID cards, vis-a-vie, passport and birth certificate”, Koku Anyidoho stated.

President Akufo-Addo described as unfortunate the claim by the NDC that, using only birth certificates and passports as base documents for the registration of Ghanaians for the Ghana Card will de-nationalize over 20 million Ghanaians.

Speaking at the 2018 Ashesi University congregation over the weekend, President Akufo-Addo said “I do not think that there are more credible basic document requirements for establishing nationality or citizenship than a birth certificate or a passport. An appropriate acceptable mechanism has been provided in the law to verify the claims of those who have neither”.

“What then are we to make of the outrage being orchestrated by some high-ranking leaders of the opposition and some members of the minority in parliament when all the evidence points to their enthusiastic support of the national identity register amendment bill when it came before them in the House. I pray that we abandon giving politics a bad name and support this exercise to proceed rapidly to a successful end”.

However, in an interview with Prime news, on Tuesday, June 26,2018, the Deputy General Secretary said, if President Akufo-Addo and his government claims the voter’s ID is now illegitimate card to prove a person’s citizenship in Ghana, then his legitimacy as a President of Ghana must also be questioned.

“What is wrong with the voter’s ID, the President won his mandate on the voter’s ID, if today we are being told the voter’s ID is illegitimate, is the President now telling us that we should also question the legitimacy of his Presidency”?
